Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP)
Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges through four decades of research at the University of Maryland and the University of North Carolina, the Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) is a non-invasive, sound-based therapeutic intervention designed to reset the nervous system.
When integrated with other somatic modalities, SSP offers a powerful “bottom-up” approach that can accelerate and amplify the effectiveness of additional treatments.
SSP brings measurable relief to individuals suffering from:
Developmental trauma and early attachment trauma
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Anxiety (including social and generalized)
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
PTSD and Complex PTSD
Panic attacks
Dissociation
Depression
SSP dramatically reduces Long COVID symptoms like:
Autonomic dysregulation (e.g., POTS-like symptoms, heart rate variability issues)
Fatigue and brain fog (via improved vagal tone and neuroregulation)
Anxiety and mood swings (common post-viral effects)
Sensory sensitivity (light, sound, smell)
Sleep disturbances
Emotional reactivity or shutdown
Social withdrawal or difficulty connecting
“I felt a shift toward more calm and openness. Using my language, it seems like the music helps protective parts relax so people can access more Self - that healing essence within everyone.”
Dr. Richard Schwartz (Internal Family Systems)
“SSP complements the Somatic Experiencing concepts of titration and pendulation (the inner rhythm between contraction and expansion), which are essential for building resilience.”
Dr. Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing)
